We Believe
The Nicene Creed: The Symbol of Faith
(with Scripture references)
I believe in One God (Deut 6:4), the Father Almighty (Eph 4:6), Maker of heaven and earth (Gen 1:1, 1:26, Ex. 20.11), and all things visible and invisible (Col. 1:16, Rom 1:20).
And in one Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 4:5, 1 Cor 8:6), the Son of God (Matt 16:16), the Only-Begotten (John 1:18, 1 John 5:1), begotten of the Father before all ages (John 1:1, 17:5), Light of Light (Heb 1.3; Wis. 7.26, John 1:4, 1:7-8, Acts 9:3, 1 Tim 6:16), True God of True God (Col 2:9, John 1:1, Mark 2:7, Isa 44:6, Rev 1:11), begotten, not made (John 1:1, Heb 7:3, John 8:58, 17:5, Phil 2:6), of one essence with the Father (John 10:30, 1 John 2:23), by whom all things were made (John 1:3, 1:10, Col 1:16); who for us men and our salvation (Matt 1:21, Luke 2:30) came down from heaven (John 3:13, 6:38), and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary (Luke 1:35, Isa 7:14) and became man (John 1:14, 1 John 4:2). And was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate (John 19:16), and suffered (Ps. 21, Isa 53, Matt 27, Heb 2:9), and was buried (Luke 23:53) and on the third day rose again (Matt 28:6), according to the scriptures (1 Cor 15:4), and ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9, Luke 24:51), and sits at the right hand of the Father (Heb 1:3), and shall come again (Matt 16:27, Heb 9:28) with glory to judge the living and the dead (2 Cor 5:10), whose Kingdom shall have no end (Isa 9:6, Rev 22:5, Dan 7).
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life (Gen 1:2, Rom 8:2, Joel 2:28, Gen 2:7, Ps. 34:6), who proceeds from the Father (direct quote of John 15:26), who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified (John 16:14-15, 1 John 5:7, 2 Cor 13:14, Mark 3:29), who spake by the prophets (Heb 1:1, Num 11:29, 1 Sam 16:13).
In one holy, catholic, and apostolic church (Eph 4:4, Matt 16:18, Eph 1:22, 5:23, 1 Tim 3:15, Hebrews 12:23); I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins (Eph 4:5, Matt 28:19, Acts 2:38); I look for the resurrection of the dead (1 Cor 15:52, Ez 37) and the life of the world to come (Col 3:1-4, 1&2 Thes, Rev 21, 22), Amen.
Our faith
“With these [the cherubim and seraphim who eternally hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth (Is 6.6)], O Master who lovest mankind, we also cry aloud and Say: Holy art thou and all-holy, thou and thine Only-Begotten Son and thy Holy Spirit. Holy art thou and all-holy, and magnificent is thy glory; who hast so loved the world as to give thine Only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life (Jn 3.16); who, when he had come and had fulfilled all the dispensation for us, in the night in which he was given up — or rather gave himself up for the life of the world — took bread in his holy, most pure, and blameless hands, and when he had given thanks, and blessed it, and hallowed it, and broken it, he gave it to his holy disciples and apostles, saying:
“Take, eat: This is my Body which is broken for you, for the remission of sins.”
And likewise after supper he took the cup, saying:
“Drink of it, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins.”
Remembering this saving commandment and all those which have come to pass for us: the Cross, the Tomb, the Resurrection on the third day, the Ascension into heaven, the Sitting at the right hand, and the second and glorious coming, offering unto thee thine own of thine own, on behalf of all and for all, we praise thee, we bless thee, we give thanks unto thee, O Lord, and we pray unto thee, O our God.”
~from the Anaphora of St John Chrysostom
